How to use Smart Speed to watch videos faster without missing anything

Updated May 13, 20264 min read

Smart Speed (also called silence skipper with adaptive rate) watches the audio level in real time. During pauses and slow speech it nudges the speed up; during fast dialogue it holds steady. The result is a shorter runtime that still feels natural.

  1. 1
    Step 1

    Install VidBar

Add VidBar from the Chrome Web Store. Smart Speed works on YouTube, Coursera, Udemy, and any HTML5 video.

  2. 2
    Step 2

    Open a video

Long lectures and podcasts benefit the most — anything with variable pace.

  3. 3
    Step 3

    Turn on Smart Speed

In the VidBar toolbar, find the Smart Speed toggle and enable it.

  4. 4
    Step 4

    Set your base speed

Set your preferred baseline — 1× or 1.25× is comfortable for most content. Smart Speed will climb from there during slow sections.

  5. 5
    Step 5

    Adjust the silence threshold

Lower the dB threshold to catch more pauses. Raise it if Smart Speed is triggering too often on quiet music.

  6. 6
    Step 6

    Watch the speed indicator

A small speed readout in the toolbar shows live speed changes. Most sessions cut 15–30% off runtime.

FAQ

  • Is Smart Speed the same as silence skipper?

They are related — silence skipper jumps over silence instantly, while Smart Speed raises the rate smoothly during slow sections. Both save time; Smart Speed feels more natural on speech-heavy content.

  • Does Smart Speed work on music videos?

It can, but most people turn it off for music since it distorts pacing and rhythm.
