How to listen to YouTube in audio-only mode on Chrome

Updated May 13, 20263 min read

Audio-only mode stops the video track from loading while keeping the audio stream alive. It is useful for podcasts, lectures, and music on YouTube when you do not need to watch the screen — and it cuts bandwidth use significantly.

  1. 1
    Step 1

    Install VidBar

Audio-only mode is a one-click toggle in VidBar. Install it from the Chrome Web Store.

  2. 2
    Step 2

    Open a YouTube video

Any video works — podcasts, lectures, music, interviews.

  3. 3
    Step 3

    Click audio-only in the toolbar

In the VidBar toolbar, click the headphones / audio-only icon. The video frame goes dark and only the audio continues.

  4. 4
    Step 4

Keep the tab in the background

Minimise Chrome or switch tabs. The audio keeps playing without the video decode load.

  5. 5
    Step 5

Optional: combine with the sleep timer

If you are listening at night, set a sleep timer so the audio stops automatically.

  6. 6
    Step 6

    Toggle off to restore video

Click the icon again to re-enable the video track at any time.
